The Dog Days of Summer

Has the heat of the summer got you down? Not really sure about what to do or where do go next? We have the inside scoop on all of the wonderful activities to both beat the heat and take full advantage of these last days of summer.

West Orange:

Paint at the Zoo: On August 12 and 26 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, the zoo will be holding painting classes for children of all ages, for just $37 per painter. On Wednesday nights, the zoo also hosts “Zoo-Vies” – family friendly movies at 7:30 PM.


OSPAC, the Oskar Schindler Performing Arts Center, is holding two fantastic music festivals that are not to be missed! On August 12 from 12:00 PM until 9:30 PM, be sure to check out the 3rd Annual House Head Summerfest with performances from popular house music artists and DJs – all for free! On Sunday, August 13th, gospel music lovers can check out Gospel Summerfest from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Tickets are only $15 adults and $5 for kids. Also, don’t forget about free movie nights every Thursday at 7:30 PM!

South Orange:

Not really sure if yoga is your thing? Be sure to attend an evening of yoga with professional Tonia Moore at the South Orange Chiropractor Center on August 16. You’ll be able to attend a half-hour session from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM for free!

There is fantastic celebrity concert coming to town called “The Thing of Ours” on August 19 at 6:30 PM at SOPAC. Tickets are available for $30 for performances and $50 for performances plus the after-party.

Also keep in mind the free events during South Orange Summer Nights: Art in the Park, Concerts in the Park, and Moonlit Movies at Flood’s Hill Park. Festivities are every Wednesday, beginning at 6:00 PM.



Summer concerts at the Springfield Avenue Gazebo are wrapping up. Tonight, August 4 between 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, check out the free performance by the Grupo Warachando Latin Dance band! You’ll also want to catch the Indian Classical Music concert at Memorial Park on August 13 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

Bring the entire family out to the Hilton branch library after hours for some great family fun! On August 7 from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM, the Hilton library will be holding a family fort night where you can bring some snacks, read, and participate in some amazing activities.

Looking for some fresh vegetables and fruits, and various delicious types of food? The vast Farmer’s Market takes place every Monday from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM! Check out all of the fantastic vendors along both Yale and Oberlin Street! Finally, improve your sewing skills with incredible summer classes every Saturday from 9:30 AM until 12:00 PM, for just $55 per day!

Calling all art lovers! Come take a tour of the historic Montclair Art Museum on August 20, and every third Sunday of every month at 2:00 PM!


Music lovers rejoice! You don’t want to miss the legendary Smokey Robinson perform live on August 26! Come down to the Memorial Auditorium at Montclair State University for an unforgettable night and help raise money for charity! Doors open 7:00 PM and tickets start at just $75!

S.O.F.I.A is a fantastic non-profit organization that advocated for and supports temporary housing for at-risk women and children of domestic violence. Get involved with their fantastic initiatives and campaigns and come out to their summer soiree on August 20 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM! Held at the Vital Jamaican Restaurant, you’ll enjoy mingling with others who are passionate about helping this amazing organization all while indulging in some world-class fare!

There’s never a bad time to bask in some mediation! Check out Yoga on the Plaza every Friday at 9:00 AM at the Montclair Public Library for free! Taught by yoga experts from the local YMCA, bring out your mats and take in some fresh air all while improving your health!
